About me

My name is Michael Egli. I was born on the 1st October 1993 in Langnau im Emmental, Canton of Bern, Switzerland. My parents both come from farming backgrounds. As a result, I feel very connected to plants, trees and nature.

I finished pre-school and my first year of school in the state system. I couldn’t cope with the rigid structure and high pressure at all, which is why I spent my remaining eight years of school at the Steiner school in Steffisburg. Although my school days weren’t my favourite time in general, I felt much better off at the Steiner school and I would definitely not be where I am today if I had gone to a state school.

My entry into the world of work began with a failure. I completed one year of training as a gardener specialising in trees. Then I changed direction and stumbled, more or less by chance, upon the profession of stonemasonry. I discovered my talent for working with stone and realised how easy an apprenticeship is if you truly enjoy the job you are learning. My determination to only do what is really important to me comes from this realisation. Anything else is a waste of time.

I really like making things with my hands, seeing the results of my work and knowing that I am achieving something meaningful. The stonemason’s trade is satisfying on many different levels, starting with the fact that you are tired in the evening and sometimes dirty too.

Working with natural stone takes a lot of time. Stone is a heavy and valuable building material mostly used in classical building. Therefore, I often work on historic buildings that have shaped an area, a town or even our whole country (for example, the Federal Palace of Switzerland, the National Bank, etc.).

Knowing that many stonemasons before me have put a lot of time and sweat into the maintenance of these artistic monuments, as well as the hope that stonemasons after me will continue my work, fills me with pride and a little awe. This and more makes me want to devote myself completely to my craft, for as long as I can.
